Student Housing Shines as Singapore’s GIC Capitalizes on Rising Demand Mention student housing, and most people will think of cramped dormitories, raucous parties and dirty socks — not sparkling investment opportunities. But Singapore’s $353.6 billion sovereign wealth fund, GIC, is moving with alacrity into this niche real-estate sector and buying up assets in major university towns. This year alone, GIC has splashed out hundreds of millions dollars on portfolios of student housing in Europe, the U.K. and U.S. Just last week, GIC struck one of its largest single deals to date in the U.K., partnering with Dubai-based student-housing developer GSA to purchase a portfolio of student-accommodation halls from Los Angeles-based alternative investment firm Oaktree Capital Management for £700 million ($907.7 million).
